In 1930, BMW introduced the Type 3/15 PS DA 3 Wartburg, a sports car designed to captivate passionate drivers. Styled on the British Austin 7 "Ulster," the Wartburg model was named after the iconic Wartburg Castle, a striking landmark in Eisenach. This marked the first time since 1903 that an automobile bore the name of this historic site, creating a unique connection between the brand and its local heritage.
The BMW 3/15 PS DA 3 Wartburg was a lightweight roadster, weighing just 400 kg, making it highly agile and suitable for motorsport. Under the hood, it featured a 750 cc four-cylinder engine, which was tuned to produce 18 horsepower (an increase from the standard 15 hp), achieved through enhanced compression. Additionally, the engine was equipped with a copper intake manifold and a twin exhaust system for improved performance. This powerful setup made the Wartburg an appealing choice for motorsport enthusiasts and it quickly became a successful contender in competitive racing.
Despite its sporty appeal and lightweight design, the Wartburg was produced in limited numbers, with only 150 units sold up until 1931. However, it played a pivotal role in shaping BMW’s motorsport history, laying the foundation for the brand’s future success in racing. With its striking design and competitive edge, the 3/15 PS DA 3 Wartburg remains a charming piece of BMW’s early automobile history.
